Beijing News
One of several dailies in the Games’ host city went with an appropriately big photo and a headline announcing a grand opening ceremony.

2.WashPost300.jpg
The Washington Post
Not the most elaborate display in the States, but quite possibly the best photo of Beijing National Stadium – “The Bird’s News” – from opening night.

3.ElPeriodico300.jpg
El Periódico, Spain
The headline translates literally to “China explodes,” but just as interesting is the photographer’s perch next to The Washington Post shooter!

4.Guardian300.jpg
The Guardian, London
The Guardian played up both the opening splendor of the Olympic Games and the impending war between Russia and Georgia in an interesting juxtaposition.

5.LaPresse300.jpg
La Presse, Montreal
The headline translates to “masterly,” and the photo play showing participants and spectators under the glow of the Olympic Torch is masterly, indeed.

6.Valeparaibano300.jpg
valeparaibano, Sãn José dos Campos, Brazil
Yes, another Bird’s Nest and fireworks shot. But doing the head in Chinese with the Portuguese translation beneath (loosely, “a festival as good as gold began in Beijing”) was a nice creative touch.

7.CourierMail300.jpg
The Courier-Mail, Brisbane, Austrailia
Borrowing from the playbook many U.S. papers have used over the years, the Courier & Mail wrapped their front page with another glorious Bird’s Nest photo, though the additional photos and typography seem a little too clunky.
