Determination, persistence and optimism remain front and center as the ASNE Journalism for a New Age endowment campaign enters its second year of fundraising. ASNE Foundation president Edward Seaton, executive director Scott Bosley and board members have been meeting with potential donors from the news industry and affiliated foundations. It is undoubtedly a challenging environment for raising funds. Nevertheless, our discussions have been positive and are helping ASNE further define the centrality of its role in helping editors lead change.
Since the campaign’s public launching at the annual convention in 2007, 93 generous donors — most of them ASNE members — have pledged or given nearly $400,000. Member support is critical for the success of the campaign as it demonstrates to others a strong belief in ASNE and its future. If you haven’t yet contributed to this initiative, we ask that you join those who have. We hope to reach $600,000 in member donations by the ASNE convention in April. Every contribution helps and is appreciated.

The Asian American Journalists Association has chosen ASNE Diversity Director Bobbi Bowman to receive the organization’s 2007 Leadership In Diversity Award.
In making the award, which will be formally presented at the group’s August convention in Miami, AAJA praised Bowman’s leadership of ASNE’s annual census, the benchmark for measurement of diversity in American newsrooms. AAJA also cited Bowman’s work in creating skills training and her dedication to the goal of increasing the number of minority managers and supervisors.

“Bobbi has been a fixture at minority journalist conventions, workshops and special events for many years. She’s a tireless advocate who also oversees the massive annual census for ASNE, an essential tool for holding the industry accountable regarding diversity. She’s a familiar, outspoken face for ASNE diversity advocacy who doesn’t shrink from speaking her mind. The AAJA leadership award is well deserved for Bobbi.” — Gilbert Bailon, ASNE president
“Bobbi has done amazing work for the cause of diversity. I’m thrilled to see her receive such a wonderful honor.” — Caesar Andrews, chair, ASNE Diversity Committee |
